Avoid unwanted registrations on a WordPress website by using one of the following methods
Wordpress' out of the box option
WordPress has a built-in option to disable user registration. You can turn off user registration altogether to prevent spam registrations. Here’s how:
-
Go to your WordPress dashboard.
-
Navigate to Settings > General.
-
Uncheck the box next to "Anyone can register."
-
Save Changes.
Free plugin option
Plugins provide more advanced options and customization for handling spam registrations. One highly recommended plugin is Akismet. Akismet automatically checks all user registrations against its global database of spam to block suspicious registrations.
Steps to install
-
Install and activate the Akismet plugin from the WordPress Plugin Directory.
-
Follow the setup instructions to connect Akismet to WordPress.com (the account admin will need an active account at wordpress.com to obtain an API key, which is free for personal sites - login or connect your website here).
Paid plugin option
Another paid option is Anti-Spam by CleanTalk, which offers similar features and integrates seamlessly with WordPress.
