My site is down. What should I do?

Follow the instructions below when you believe your site has crashed or is down

1. Check that the error is not a local issue.

Sometimes a website will appear down because of an issue on your device or your personal internet connection.

  • Use an online resource like https://www.isitdownrightnow.com/ to check whether your site is down for everyone.
  • Try accessing the website on your phone's mobile network.
  • Ask a colleague on a different internet connection if they can successfully load the site.

If all of the above indicates the site is down, proceed to the next step.

2. Contact your hosting provider.

If you have a hosting plan with Elevation, use the Collaborator Access we have granted you in order to chat with Pressable:

  • Log into Pressable.
  • Use the chat function to speak to a Pressable rep.
  • Provide them with the following information:
    • What time did you first see the site down?
    • Were there any changes made to the site before the site went down?
    • When was the last time you saw the site working normally?
  • If the issue cannot be resolved, ask to restore a backup. Through our hosting plan, Pressable makes routine backups of your website. Choose a backup date and time at which the site was previously working. The restore will bring your site back to that working state.

If you host your site elsewhere - contact your hosting provider directly.

First, determine whom your hosting provider is by using an online resource such as www.whoishostingthis.com. Then, contact their support team and provide them with the following information:

  • What time did you first see the site down?
  • Were there any changes made to the site before the site went down?
  • When was the last time you saw the site working normally?

If the error cannot be fixed at this time, ask your hosting provider to restore a backup of the site. Be sure the date and time of the backup is a time in which the site was previously working. Restoring a backup of the site will bring it back to that working state.

If your site crashes often, you may want to upgrade your site's hosting. Elevation Web provides hosting services through our Essential Hosting Plan. For more information, feel free to contact us or send any questions to support@elevationweb.org.
